One of Four Fr. 2003-D* Notes Graded by PMG

Fr. 2003-D* $10 1928C Light Green Seal Federal Reserve Star Note. PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ.
We originally auctioned this rare Cleveland star at our January 2006 FUN auction. It was not third party graded at the time and realized over $54,000 after an extended bidding war. It was the very first 1928C star that we had auctioned from the two districts that issued stars, Cleveland and Chicago. It turned up in a cash hoard of Cleveland district notes that was discovered by a rural numismatic dealer who made a habit of scouring the unbeaten path for paper money and coin treasures. This was the only 1928C $10, regular or star, in that Forest City group. We described it in 2006, before it was third party encapsulated, as "a lovely note, bright, fresh, utterly original, and totally unmolested, and would easily merit the full Gem grade were the back centering the equal of the front." Those words remain true today. Since 2006, PMG has graded not only our current offering, but three more, a PMG VF 25, a PMG VF 30, and a PMG Gem 65 EPQ. The 65 EPQ crossed our auction block in September 2024 with a winning bid of $34,800. Our current offering may receive a winning bid on the heels of the 65 EPQ example as there are only a grand total of five 1928C stars known, the four from Cleveland and just one from Chicago.
