Description

Ornate Underprint Series 1875 $100 Legal Tender

Fr. 169 $100 1875 Legal Tender PMG Very Fine 25.
Only thirteen examples are known of this number in all grades combined, a number which has not changed in more than two decades. This issue is distinct because of its Allison-New signature combination, but more importantly for the ornate engraving as an underprint to ward off counterfeiters. It is a major design type among the Legal Tender $100s. Three of the survivors are in permanent institutional collections, including the lone Uncirculated example. Add then the Friedberg 170, which is also Series 1875, a mere four more examples are added to the number of collectible pieces available, all of which are VF in grade or lower. PMG indicates the note has been repaired, but the security underprint is stronger than see on most of the other survivors.
