Description
Rare Serial Number 1 Small Size $50
Serial Number 1 Troy, NY - $50 1929 Ty. 1 The Union National
Bank Ch. # 963 PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.The only serial number 1 small size $50s from the entire state of New York come from this bank's first sheet of Type 1 $50s, according to the National Currency Foundation census. While many serial number 1 examples of the lower denominations from around the country were saved, the high face value of the $50 and $100 notes made any such souvenir hunting cost prohibitive for any collector in 1929. Fortunately, by a quirk of fate, the first sheet of $50s from this charter was saved to the delight of collectors today. As the only small size number 1 $50s known from the Empire State, it makes this attractive note even that more desirable. This near-Gem example from the "D" position of the sheet sports dark inks and solid embossing. Last on the market in a 2017 auction, this is an important New York National that combines rarity with grade.
