Rare Chelsea First Charter

Chelsea, VT - $5 1875 Fr. 401 The First National Bank Ch. # 2120 PCGS Very Fine 25PPQ.
An excessively rare Vermont bank with just two pieces listed in the census, only one of which has appeared in the last 75 years. The First National was a First Charter only institution opening its doors in 1873 and then liquidating in 1893 at the expiration of its 20 year charter. At that point, it was succeeded by charter number 4929. Only two notes have been enumerated on this charter number; an Original Series Ace and a 1875 $5 graded Good that was Lot 3160 in Barney Bluestone's sale of the fabled Albert Grinnell Collection in March 1946. Tonight's offering is quite possibly the Grinnell note as grading in 1945 tended to be markedly different than the standards used today. Either way, this is still a very nice note and it features bold ink colors, dark pen signatures, and original surfaces. Even with the tight New England trim, this $5 is still very attractive for the grade.
