Incredible Texas Serial Number 1 First Charter Five
Likely the First National Bank Note Issued for All Texas Banks

Serial Number 1 Galveston, TX - $5 Original Fr. 397a The First National Bank Ch. # 1566 PMG Very Fine 20.
This fantastic note from this Gulf Coast bank is the only Serial Number 1 First Charter example of any denomination reported from any Lone Star State bank. Certainly the highlight of all the great Texas notes we are offering this evening, this impressive piece is being offered tonight to the collecting fraternity for the first time.

As this Galveston bank was the first National Bank in Texas to receive a charter in October of 1865, shortly after the conclusion of the Civil War, this Original Series $5 could very well be from the first sheet of Nationals issued to any bank in the state of Texas giving it even greater historical importance.

PMG has noted some repairs, but overall, this note has a very nice appearance, with attractive color, decent margins, and the clear pen signatures of bank officers Thomas H. McMahon as President and John B. Root as Cashier. The First National was destined to be a long-lived institution and remained an independent entity until a bank merger in 1955. A historical marker in Galveston on Strand Street proudly proclaims the first location of the bank's building. Any estimate is simply a guess on such an important artifact of Texas financial history, so we will be conservative and let the bidders decide what it takes to bring this trophy home tonight.
