Description

Extremely Rare Tonopah Large Size

Tonopah, NV - $10 1902 Plain Back Fr. 626 The Nevada First National Bank Ch. # (P)8530 PCGS Very Fine 20.
A great Nevada rarity, this note is one of only seven large reported from this always popular Nevada location. This institution was the sole National Bank in Tonopah, a mining town which owes its existence to the discovery of rich veins of silver in 1900 that re-established Nevada as America's largest producer of silver, the Comstock Lode having played out several years earlier. Within the span of only a few years, great fortunes were made and the town's population exploded, reaching over 8,000 by 1906. By 1907, the year this bank was organized, Tonopah had become the financial center of Nevada, with four banks with a combined million-dollar-plus capitalization serving the community. While the silver mining boom has long passed, this area is still a substantial producer of the metal, although the population of the town has declined to just under 2,500. Displaying even wear and pleasing color with just a small rust stain, this offering is the only large note from here to have a public appearance since we sold another PCGS Very Fine 20 example for almost $30,000 in our 2015 Long Beach Auction.
