Description

Excessively Rare and Very Attractive Original Series First Charter $100

Amsterdam, NY - $100 Original Fr. 454a The First National Bank Ch. # 1307 PCGS Banknote Choice VF 35.
This is a quite lovely example of this very rare type and denomination that, surprisingly, hails from a small upstate New York bank. The National Currency Foundation census enumerates just 43 Original Series $100s for the entire country with seven of those pieces coming from California National Gold Banks, while three others are ensconced in institutional holdings. Just eight are reported from New York State banks - six from New York City charters (one of which is held by the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond), one from Kingston, and the note we are offering this evening. PCGS Banknote has mentioned minor restorations on this pretty note but any such repairs are not at all distracting. The center vignette with the signing of the Declaration of Independence on the back is bold and fully detailed. On the face, not only are the printed details sharply defined, the Treasury seal is very bold as are the bank officers' pen signatures. By way of comparison, we auctioned a PMG Very Fine 30 example from Williamsport, PA four years ago which brought $66,000. This clearly superior piece should certainly exceed that realization.
