Unique for Bank and Town

Boulder Valley, MT - $10 1882 Brown Back Fr. 484 The First National Bank Ch. # 4323 PMG Very Fine 25.
A true miracle of survival, this great Montana rarity is the sole example reported from one of this western state's smallest, and most short-lived, issuers. Established in the late 19th Century and named for the numerous large boulders in the area, this southwestern Montana community of just 200 souls, at that time, was the host to just one national bank, the First National. It opened in 1890, shortly after statehood, and issued just 402 sheets of $10 and $20 Brown Backs before closing forever in 1894. In 1910, it had just a paltry $150 outstanding. This unique $10 Brown Back made its lone public appearance in our 1998 ANA auction and has been off the market since that time. It is a well margined piece with bold ink colors and sharp pen signatures. It also represents the scarcer early variety of $10 Brown Backs with the vertical charter number. PMG has mentioned pinholes, but they are not at all distracting. This is a wonderful note for any collector who appreciates rare and unique Nationals.
