Philadelphia, PA - $5 Original Fr. 397a The Bank of North
America Ch. # 602 PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45.A beautiful Original Series $5 from this historic institution, which was exempted by an Act of Congress from the requirement that all banks accepting a federal charter under the National Banking Act use the word "National" somewhere in their title. Legend has it that this legislation was passed in recognition of this bank's leading role in selling U.S. Treasury debt to the public during the darkest days of the Civil War. All notes from this bank are avidly collected. This piece is one of only a handful of early high grade examples listed in the census. The colors, paper and signatures are well nigh perfect, and the note appears as though it would fit just as easily into an Uncirculated holder.
