Nicely Preserved $10 1882 Brown Back Proof

Hessler 509 (New York, NY) - $10 1882 Brown Back Fr. 479-92 (The National Bank of the Republic of New York) Ch. # 1000 Back Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
A nicely preserved Back Proof for $10 Brown Backs utilizing charter number "1000" for the center design. This charter number belonged to the National Bank of the Republic of New York. However, the state seal at left is the Alabama state seal instead of the New York state seal. As a Proof note, the state seal did not need to be the correct seal as it was only needed for illustrative purposes. Alabama's state seal was probably used because it is the first state in alphabetical order. Also, charter number 1000 was probably employed because the BEP wanted to see how a four-digit charter number would appear on the back. This Alabama state seal design has an eagle with a ribbon in its mouth that reads, "Here We Rest." The generic right eagle vignette was used on all $5 and $10 Brown Backs. This state seal design for the Yellowhammer State was in use from 1868-1939, and in 1940, Alabama went back to the original state seal map design that was in use before 1868. We have seen, much less offered, very few National Bank Note Proofs in our auctions. A minor foreign substance spot is observed on the back of the cardstock.
