Excessively Rare Island City NB of Key West Note
Key West, FL - $10 1902 Date Back Fr. 617 The Island City
National Bank Ch. # (S)7942 PMG Choice Fine 15 Net.This is an absolutely wonderful Florida rarity that comes from a short-lived Key West bank that issued Red Seals and Date Backs only during its brief ten-year existence. It is one of just two pieces reported from this charter - one being a $5 Red Seal that is listed in the census without a serial number and which has never appeared at public sale and this $10 Date Back which surfaced in 2013 and was subsequently offered in our 2014 FUN auction. This pleasing mid-grade example, which just had a minor restoration, fetched $35,250 in its previous public appearance. Considering it is just as rare today as it was eleven years ago, it could very likely approach that number again.
