Description
Richmond, VA- A.E. Whitten & Co. 30¢ Oct. 16, 1861 Jones-Littlefield PR60-925 Remainder PMG Choice Fine 15.This 30¢ note on A.E. Whitten & Co. is somewhat problematic to attribute. While we are confident that the name is correct, a search of the 1860 census and 1860 and 1866 Richmond City Directories, as well as Richmond newspapers from 1860-65, has found nothing on the firm. The Wall Street address mentioned on this note seems to tie it to the issues of I.C. Whitten, which were payable at the St. Charles Hotel located at the corner of Wall and Main Streets in Richmond. The 30¢ note, which bears a portrait of Washington in a panel at left, is quite scarce, with Jones giving it an R-6 (5-9 surviving notes) rating. PMG mentions that the note has been repaired, but there is no glaring evidence of this. While technically a remainder due to no serial number, we believe this note undoubtedly saw circulation. We have not offered this denomination previously.
