Description

Richmond, VA- Virginia Savings Bank 20¢ Sep. 6, 1861 Jones-Littlefield BR135-08 PMG Very Fine 20.
The bank was chartered in 1855 by the state legislature and appears to have begun winding up its affairs by late 1864 when holders of certificates of deposit were asked to present them to the bank for redemption. This scrip was payable in bankable funds when presented in sums of $5 and had the engraved signature of the Treasurer, D.B. Starke. PMG mentions a tear that is not readily visible, but either way, it remains a very scarce note with a Jones rarity rating of R-6 (5-9 surviving examples known).
