Newly Reported Escondido Plain Back

Escondido, CA - $5 1902 Plain Back Fr. 609 The First National Bank Ch. # 13029 PMG Very Fine 25.
This is a great new addition to the census of this very rare and very short-lived San Diego area issuer. Opening in January of 1927, this charter issued only a handful of $5 Plain Backs before closing its doors in 1929. Just three pieces are listed in the census, only one of which has ever been publicly offered - a Serial Number 1 example that brought $36,000 at auction two years ago. This newly reported note with engraved signatures, which bears fancy solid serial number 1111, displays even wear, sharp ink colors, and bold BEP engraved signatures. It provides one fortunate collector an opportunity to acquire a note from this rare bank at a more affordable (albeit not cheap) level than the Number 1 note offered two years ago. The minor rust mentioned on the PMG back label is no more than a few flyspecks found on the back,
