Description

Lockport, NY- Niagara County Bank $10 July 1, 1856 as G10a Face Proof; Back Proof PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ; PMG Superb Gem Unc 67 EPQ.
The $10 design, like the $1, makes lavish use of color, with a lighter red background tint accentuated by darker red-brown borders and other design elements. The use of vignettes is limited to a large depiction of a mechanic standing by his anvil with factories in the distance and the bank department die at bottom right. A large red and white X protector is under TEN DOLLARS printed in red. The back Proof is a red overall geometric design with a large red and white TEN in the middle. Both face and back are printed on India paper with the face Proof having the usual POCs in the signature lines. This note was part of an uncut sheet that appeared as part of Lot 1173 in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. This sheet was believed to be so striking that it was the subject of a full page color plate in the sale catalog, page 192. We believe that both the face and back Proofs for this denomination remain unique in Proof form, a situation that has remained unchanged for over three decades. (Total: 2 notes)
