Description
Richmond, VA- J.D. Edwards 25¢ July 14, 1862 Jones-Littlefield PR60-294 PMG Very Fine 20.This is a rare and important type of Confederate military related scrip. Edwards had a profitable arrangement when this note was issued. He would pick up the mail and newspapers in Richmond and deliver these into the field. While at the front he could sell newspapers, postage, and other items and then return to Richmond with the mail to post. Eventually this mail carrier's practice was curtailed, perhaps at the behest of the official regimental sutlers. There are two varieties of this design, one listing Edwards' affiliation with the Eighth Brigade (of the Army of Northern Virginia), and one without that reference. It is unclear if this omission, as found on this note, has any significance. It is possible, for example, that Edwards provided this service for multiple military units. The design features the state coat of arms and has a clear signature at bottom right. There is a tiny chip out of the top right corner tip. Jones lists this as an R-7 note with 2-4 surviving notes estimated.
