Finest of Four Coalinga Notes Known

Coalinga, CA - $5 1902 Date Back Fr. 592 The First National Bank Ch. # (P)9323 PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45 EPQ.
Another great California rarity, this is the finest of just four pieces reported from this one-bank Fresno County location. The First National was only in business from 1909 until its liquidation in 1922 and issued only a handful of 1902 Date Backs and Plain Backs. As mentioned, just four notes are reported - two low-grade notes that have not been on the market in quite some time, a $10 Date Back that is listed in the census without a serial number, and this beautiful $5 Date Back. In its last market appearance, at our 2015 Central States auction, this piece brought over $25,000. It is a beautiful piece that bears the dual color pen signatures of father-and-son team Berton Einstein as Cashier and Louis Einstein as President. Louis Einstein was a pioneer merchant, banker, and civic leader in Fresno County. Considering the continuing demand for high-quality California material, this bright and original $5 could approach its 2015 realization again.
