500 Shares April 5, 1882. PMG Choice Very Fine 35.The Standard Oil Trust, formed in 1882 by John D. Rockefeller, is a landmark entity in U.S. business history as it pioneered the modern corporation and monopoly structure. It consolidated dozens of oil-related businesses under a single umbrella, allowing it to control nearly every aspect of oil production, refining, transportation, and marketing in the United States. Its dominance sparked widespread public concern about the unchecked power of large corporations, ultimately leading to the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890. In 1911, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Standard Oil had violated antitrust laws and ordered its breakup into 34 independent companies. The trust's rise and fall was a defining moment in business innovation and the ushering in of more corporate regulation in the capitalist economy.
The Standard Oil Trust Stock Certificate offered here has a printed $100/share value. This certificate was issued to William G. Warden who was one of Standard Oil Trust's co-founders and a prominent businessman in his own right. This certificate also bears the signature of Henry M. Flagler as Secretary, Jabez Bostwick as Treasurer, and John D. Rockefeller as President. All three signatures have been line cancelled as is always the case. The paper is solid with some folds. PMG has noted the cancellation as well as the counterfoil being reattached. Furthermore, this is a collectible item only with no securities investment or trading value.
