Description

Scarce, Complete Smallest Denomination Spanish-American War Bond of 1898

$20 Spanish-American War 3% Coupon Bond of 1898 Hessler X188G PCGS Extremely Fine 40 Apparent.
The $20 is the smallest denomination for this patriotic coupon bond issue which financed America's war with Spain. This bond is complete, with all 80 of its original coupons still attached, even if the third party label says that there are 64 coupons present. Patriotism and cries of "Remember the Maine!" propelled the over subscription of this successful bond issue. Interest in America's bonds has solidified during the past several years, and this is one of the very few pre-World War I bonds that is collectable. The apparent grade is for a tape repaired edge tear that is confined to the left margin. These bonds were hard to preserve due to their size. Overall, the general appearance of our current offering is quite nice with approximate measurements being 13 by 22.5 inches.
