Description
Scottsville, VA- Bank of Scottsville $5 Apr. 18, 1861 G16b Jones-Littlefield BS15-13 PMG Very Fine 20.The bank was incorporated in 1852 but did not commence active operation until July 1854. It survived the Civil War and continued in business (albeit at only reduced levels) until creditors forced the bank into receivership in July 1869. The final date for claims against the bank was July 15, 1871. The bank started life as an "Independent Bank" (Virginia's version of a "free bank") but sometime about 1860-61 decided to revert to a non-registered status (as did the vast majority of the state's Independent Banks). The bank's original notes incorporated the state banking die and had a space for the state treasurer's countersignature. The design was legally altered to omit the countersignature line and omit the state banking die, replacing it with the very similar Virginia coat of arms. The bank spent a bit more money and had the note printed in black, red, and green, with bi-color denominational counters and a large green FIVE protector. In January 1866, the bank's "secured" (Independent Bank) notes were bringing around 25¢ on the dollar while the "unregistered" notes like this $5 were bringing only 8¢ since there were no underlying securities pledged for their redemption. Very scarce, with an estimated surviving population of only 10-25 examples.
