Description
Lexington, VA- Bank of Rockbridge $5 18__ G2a PMG Choice Fine 15.The bank was authorized by the General Assembly on May 21, 1852, as an Independent Bank (Virginia's version of free banking). Its ultimate fate is not completely clear, but it is fairly certain that it closed at the end of the Civil War or shortly thereafter. At the end of the war, the State Treasurer listed $125,000 in pre-war state bonds that were held to secure the bank's circulation. Imprint of Wellstood, Hay and Whiting, New York. This $5 has a vignette of the Natural Bridge of Virginia flanked by small views depicting Washington College to the left and Virginia Military Institute to the right. A small federal shield with a ribbon containing E PLURIBUS UNUM is at bottom center. The face of the note has a red overall tint and red end panels, with a green FIVE denominational back completing the design. Signed by Cashier J.H. Myers and President Elisha F. Paxton. Paxton was a Brigadier General in the Confederate Army and died at Chancellorsville in May 1863. This scarce issue note is particularly desirable in a comment-free holder.
