Description
Excessively Rare State of Mississippi Half Sheet
(Jackson), MS- State of Mississippi $50-$20-$10-$5 Nov. 1, 1862
Cr. 33-Cr. 34-Cr. 35- Cr. 36 Uncut (Half) Sheet PMG Very Fine
30.We know from the uncut sheet listed in Shull's Southern States Catalog that a full sheet comprised a blank space in the upper left corner plus one $50 and two each of the $20, $10, and $5 denominations. Current thinking is that the blank space had been provided for the printing of a $100 denomination that ultimately was not produced, leaving a seven subject double pane sheet. The sheet in this lot then appears to be the right half of a sheet of this configuration. The notes on this four subject sheet are completely filled in and were ready for issue. The sheet seems to have gotten to the point of then being roughly trimmed down to note size and separated into two panes. For unknown reasons, that seems to be where everything stopped. The sheet shows folds between each note suggesting that it was saved and folded down to the overall footprint of one note. Your cataloger believes that it is highly unlikely that the previously known full seven subject sheet has been cut and suspects that this half sheet joins it as one of now only two sheets known at present of the Faith of the State Pledged emission. PMG notes several relatively minor imperfections. The sheet has been previously mounted with four spots of adhesive residue visible. A small tape repair has been made to a split between the $20 and $10 notes at left. There is a small body hole in the $50 in the adhesive residue spot at right. These minor distractions do not, however, diminish the rarity of this state issue sheet and knowledgeable collectors will appreciate the equally rare opportunity to acquire this historic Mississippi item. Value estimates of great rarities such as this can be problematic, but we believe that our conservative estimate will allow the market to determine this sheet's worth in today's environment.
