Description

Detroit "Odd of Odd" 18 ¾ Cents Proof

Detroit, MI- Mayor, Recorder & Alderman of the City of Detroit 18 ¾ Cents 18__ Lee DET 13-5 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
All issued notes from this 1837 Hard Times era municipality are fairly tough to find today; apparently many were redeemed. The Proofs are incredibly rare as they are from the "Rawdon" imprint family not in the ABNCo. Archive auctions. This "odd of odd" denomination was plated in Durand's "Denominations" 1988 volume and also in the Wallace Lee Michigan encyclopedia. India paper Proof by Rawdon, Wright & Hatch, New-York. Four small POC as made. Transportation vignettes flank the "18 ¾" die top center: shipping left and railways right. Left end with fancy scrollwork. Three other dies. PMG notes an annotation, but this penciling on the back corner is a pedigree mark from long ago. We offered this last at our 2004 FUN auction (lot 17330) for $2,415. Two decades later, a result in excess of that is a worthy pursuit for the astute. It is a beautiful piece from an in-demand state, an impeccable rarity with numerous attributes.
