Stellar Unique Wamesit Bank $500 Proof
Lowell, MA- Wamesit Bank $500 October 1, 18__ MA-770 G18 SENC
W-2070-500-G090 Proof PMG Superb Gem Uncirculated 67 EPQ.This is one of very few $500 Proofs from the Commonwealth and a stellar example. Certainly this is one of the elite Massachusetts black and white Proofs that originated in the 1990 Christie's sale. The sole Wamesit Bank lot was bought by John J. Ford, Jr. there and was not seen again until fifteen years later at those named auctions in New York. The unique $500, an India paper Proof on original card by Danforth, Wright & Co., presents dynamic imagery. At left, allegorical Commerce, Prosperity, and Navigation as later adapted on the T17 Confederate $20 and several Southern State bills. Standing Athena at the right. There are six POC as made, otherwise impeccable. Charles Pease, via his agent, acquired this twenty years ago for $2,530 at the Ford Part VIII Sale. We handled this a few years back in his first named auction where it realized a relatively reasonable sum. However, our admiration for this entire series and its overall beauty has always been high since 1990. Strong individual impression auction records for the past fifteen years bear that out. The most important denomination from a virtually impossible to acquire bank.
