Description

Jackson, MS- State of Mississippi $10 Jan. 19, 1863 Cr. 8b PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
This note was part of the state's first Civil War emission, printed and delivered just prior to the start of the war by ABNCo. This $10 was issued in January 1863 and made payable on June 1, 1864. Due to the high 10% interest rate, the state called these notes early and suspended all interest payments on December 5, 1863. The red-orange and black design features a vignette of a slave caring for two horses at center flanked by a portrait of Col. M.D. Haynes at lower left and another of a young woman at lower right. Two red-orange and white X medallions and a red-orange protector panel complete the design. The fully framed, well printed note retains the original red color of its security design elements with no evidence of oxidation. Of the five examples of this Criswell number appearing in the PMG Population Report at this time, this note and one other are tied for the highest reported "top pop" grade.
