Description

Boston, MA- Continental Bank $1-$1-$2-$3 Oct. 18__ G2a-G2a-G4a-G6a / X1 Uncut Sheet PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The Continental Bank was organized in 1860 and four years later became the Continental National Bank of Boston. The notes on this sheet have several interesting portraits and vignettes. The $1 notes feature a portrait of Major General David Wooster who died of wounds received at the Battle of Ridgefield, CT in 1777. The $2 features the vignette titled Black and White Beauties adapted from a painting by LeRoy depicting two horses frightened by an approaching thunderstorm. The $3 has perhaps the most interesting vignette, titled Polar Bear Attack/The White Bear, engraved by De Witt Clinton Hay and adapted from the art of internationally-known artist Felix O.C. Darley. Four fur-clad men in a small boat attempt to fend off an aggressive polar bear rising out of the water, his large paw already on the gunwale; their ship looms on the horizon. The Polar Bear Attack vignette, though not specifically historic, is relevant to the period of issue. It was engraved at the time of Henry Grinnell's expeditions in search of ill-fated explorer John Franklin and his ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, which were lost in the mid-1840s in the Canadian Arctic wilderness. The portrait on the $3 is that of American patriot General Joseph Warren, who died a martyr's death at the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775. Over the last two decades we have offered four different sheets. The PMG Population Report presently records five sheets, with one other sheet besting this one in terms of grade.
