Description

Block of Eight "Olier" Paper Second Issue Fifty Cent

Milton 2E50F.?? 50¢ Second Issue Olier Paper Block of Eight PCGS Choice About New 58.
Printed on "Olier" paper, and rare in all forms. Even as single notes, these are major rarities. This block of eight shows almost the entire word "Olier," the complete star-in-a-circle design, and almost the entire date 1860. Apparently Olier was a paper manufacturer who was hoping to sell his product to the Treasury Department. He got as far as having his paper used experimentally, but there is no evidence that it was ever used for Regular Issue notes. Olier paper has a distinctive look and feel. It also always has a yellowish tint to it. It can vary from fairly distinctive canary yellow all the way to a yellowish-tan sand color. This one is toward the whiter end of the scale. It was previously from the estate of F.C.C. Boyd, and then Lot 184 of Stack's sale of the John Jay Ford material, sold in October of 2007.
