Jewish Signer Francis Salvador Note
South Carolina November 15, 1775 £3 PMG Choice Fine 15
Net.This is the highest and rarest denomination from this more elusive South Carolina issue. Signed by Francis Salvador, Joseph Verree, and A. Toomer, this note features a cannon vignette at lower right surrounded by a laurel wreath. Above the cannon is the Latin phrase ULTIMA RATIO, which translates to "The final reckoning." The note was engraved and printed by James Oliphant, with an intriguing border design at left. It is worth noting that James Verree served South Carolina in both the First and Second Provincial Congresses. The highlight of this note, however, is the signature of historically important Jewish signer, Francis Salvador, whose background and significance in South Carolina is considerable. He descended from a wealthy Portuguese family who settled in London. Financial setbacks related to the Lisbon earthquake and the failure of the Dutch East Company led him to immigrate to South Carolina in 1773. He served in the Provincial Congress, as seen by his signature on the note offered here, and bears the distinction of being the first Jewish elected official in America. Our understanding of his untimely demise was that George Washington had personally requested that he meet with the local Indians in an effort to make a peace treaty with them. While on this mission, he was killed by the Indians, thus also earning him the distinction of being the first Jew to lose his life while fighting in the American Revolution. Despite being repaired and reconstructed, the note itself is attractive and well margined. Most importantly, it bears the F. Salvador signature. While we tend to ogle notes with Declaration of Independence signers, they are not always rare, just historically significant. This note bearing Salvador's signature is both rare and historically significant. It is only the fourth example we have auctioned and the first of this highest denomination. Francis Salvador's signature is one of the most highly prized and elusive of all Jewish-American historical figures.
