Description

Finest Known Example in this Entire Series

New Hampshire November 3, 1775 30s Contemporary Counterfeit PMG Choice About Unc 58 EPQ.
A deceptive contemporary counterfeit printed by the Tory Robert Fowle, this well preserved example is sure to draw attention this evening. The diagnostic for this counterfeit is that the base of the second "t" in "Thirty" is lower than the base of the adjacent "r." Robert Fowle, whose uncle, Daniel Fowle, was the printer of this issue, was arrested in April 1777 on suspicion of counterfeiting. The nephew left his uncle's business in 1774 due to political differences. When the younger Fowle left, he apparently took some of the type and ornaments used for the genuine notes with him. As a result of this counterfeiting, all of the issue was recalled and redeemed. Fowle agreed to turn state's evidence, but escaped from prison in August 1777. Signed by Nicholas Gilman as Receiver General, this note also features the signature of Sam(uel) Hobart at bottom. According to the PMG Population Report, tonight's offering stands alone on the mountaintop as the single-finest example they have graded for all denominations from this series.
