Handsome May 31, 1709 10 Shillings (b) Position
Colony of New York May 31, 1709 10 Shillings (b) Fr. NY-2. PCGS Extremely Fine 40 Apparent.The larger denomination from this very early series, but with a different plate position. The 10 shillings notes were printed alongside the five shillings denomination on the same sheets with two of each running across. The style and layout are the same as on the 5 shillings. As previously, uniface and printed in black by William Bradford, without imprint, on horizontal four-subject sheets. Typeset, with the top block having the indented design. Three very bold, "Dutch" style vanity signatures are seen at the bottom, with Johannes DePeyster's the first and the boldest. There are also two plate positions with different typesetting arrangements. This is the "b" position type with "Shil-lings" split on the first and second lines and the "Governour" spelling near the end of the obligation. Only 500 notes of each 10 shillings plate position were authorized. Like the five shillings, it has the look of a PPQ example, but "Ink Erosion in Signature" is noted by PCGS. Again, this is more than compensated for by the natural paper body and immaculate surfaces. This is another very handsome and bold note.
