Rare $2 1899 Silver Proof
Hessler 187 Fr. 249 $2 1899 Silver Certificate Face Proof New.A rare $2 Silver Proof that is similar in design to Hessler 187 on page 118 of U.S. Essay, Proof and Specimen Notes. We offer a beautiful Proof that was printed on India paper and then mounted on quality bond paper with the watermark of "Crane & Co Dalton Mass 1903 (Bon)d No 36." This uniface black and white Proof lacks a plate letter, but otherwise remains a faithful rendition of the adopted design and that includes the engraved Treasury officers' signatures of Lyons-Roberts. Serial number 000000 is perforated at both serial number blocks and only adds to the Proof's desirability factor. Trivial wrinkling is observed at the mounting spots in each corner, yet it has the look of a gem with its four balanced margins and resulting bull's-eye centering. Overall, a design where Proofs are especially elusive as opportunities seldom make it to the marketplace.
