Description

Very Rare Fr. 822-1-One of Five Known

Fr. 822-1 $20 1915 Federal Reserve Bank Note PMG Choice Very Fine 35.
An extreme rarity from the Atlanta district. Both Fr. 822 and Fr. 822-1 are rare numbers, with the census standing at five examples for the Fr. 822-1 and eight for Fr. 822. The difference between the two number is that Bell signs as Secretary on the Fr. 822-1, but as Cashier on the Fr. 822. We have only sold one example of the 822-1 in all of our sales combined, with that coming when we auctioned the landmark Flynn collection in April of 2008. Prior to that offering, the only sales of Fr. 822-1 notes were a severely damaged specimen which was missing pieces that sold in 2004, and the Jim Thompson collection example which was offered in 1991. The Flynn note was not quite as nice as the piece we offer tonight, and in a time and place that is fondly remembered, but not likely to occur again this evening, realized $43,125. Our best guess here is about one-half that amount, but we certainly could be pleasantly surprised if two collectors realize just how rare this note is and just how rare the opportunities to obtain it truly are.
