Description
Likely Unique Solid Zero Serial Number 1969A $1 Boston Federal Reserve Note
Solid Zero Serial Number Fr. 1904-A $1 1969A Federal Reserve Note. PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.A small size wonder note which originally came to light way back in 1973 during the Boston ANA show awaits one lucky bidder. This note was originally discovered by Tom Morrissey, whose name appears on the holder. Morrissey, who died in 1977, began working for the First National Bank of Boston in 1955 according to an article published Aug. 24, 1972 in the Town Crier in Tewksbury, MA. A laminated copy of the article is included within the lot. While working at the bank, to Tom's surprise was a brick of 4,000 notes with a label that read Pkg. No. 25000 A99996001A to A100000000A. In opening this brick Tom was rewarded with the 100 millionth note printed for the run which was not to be released by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing under any circumstance. The note itself was flagged with a red mark vertically to the right which is faded a bit. The solid nine serial number note was inadvertently replaced with a star note leaving this note offered here to become the most sought after fancy serial number small size note ever.
Included in the lot is the first note from the brick, serial number A99996001A which grades Very Choice New, as well as the front and back brick labels and wooden shipping blocks to also complete the rarest label set known. This solid zero note has been mentioned in several numismatic publications including Standard Guide to Small Size US Paper Money, 6th Edition, by Oakes & Schwartz and The U.S. Error Note Encyclopedia, 1st Edition, by Stephen Sullivan. Also included is a May 1974 copy of Paper Money autographed by Tom giving a brief report about its discovery on Pages 116-117. A program from the 82nd ANA held in Boston rounds out the lot and includes a photograph of the man responsible for its discovery on Page 6. We have been tasked with finding a new home for this irreplaceable item that is quite likely unique and are confident one fortunate collector will bring this home tonight.
