Unique Israeli Proof

Israel £5 Anglo-Palestine Bank Limited (1948) Pick UNL Face and Back Proofs
This lot consists of Thomas De La Rue face and back proofs stored in a quality album. The face and back 6 x 3 inch proofs come recess mounted on the inside left and right of two 12 x 8.25 inch hinged wooden panels covered in leather matte. The proofs appear fully engraved, but the quality of the craftsmanship is such that careful examination reveals they actually comprise engraving, paste-ups, and hand printing. Therefore, these are true production pieces. Prior to the discovery of this piece, the conventional wisdom was that the directors of the Anglo-Palestine Bank only visited the ABNCo for the preparation of Israel's first paper money. This "fact" has been accepted for decades, however this discovery piece re-writes that chapter of Israeli numismatics. The General Manager of the Anglo-Palestine Bank, E.N. Hoofien, first paid a visit to TDLR in 1948 and requested proposals for the first bank notes of Israel. After this proof was delivered, TDLR could not procure the proper export licenses from England. Therefore, Mr. Hoofien had to rush off to the ABNCo and settle for the arguably less artful designs that were adopted. This is a truly historical item and one that will make its next owner proud every time it is held in their hands. Gem Crisp Uncirculated.
