Description

Illustrious 1863 $100 Proof

Fr. 204 Hessler X138D (1143) $100 1863 Interest Bearing Note Proof With Three Attached Coupons Choice New, PC. This illustrious proof was last auctioned at Memphis 2000. This Fr. 204 proof is uniface and printed on heavily silk fibered paper. Six punch cancels have been applied through the signatures of Chittenden and Spinner, while each of the attached coupons has two punch cancels through the only signature found on them, Chittenden's. The right-hand edge reveals a trivial edge crimp, while the back right-hand side exhibits a minor defect in the paper. A stunning beauty with detailed vignettes of Farmer and Mechanics, the Treasury Building, and a vignette titled, In the Turret, which displays a Civil War naval gun crew getting ready to fire. There are only two issued Fr. 204's known, with just one in private hands. We sold that note in our Taylor Family Collection auction in February for $299,000. This proof will invite you in for a lot less than that.
