Fr. 280 $5 1899 Mule Silver Certificate PCGS Gem New 66PPQ.A mere two third party graded notes have been offered at auction in the 66 grade, with this piece the lone example to appear over the last four years. Neither PMG nor PCGS have bequeathed a Superb Gem grade to a Chief with the Elliott-White signature combination, making this a must have for the Onepapa and Friedberg number specialists. Punch through embossing is noted in the open areas of the back design and the corners are sharp. The large, even margins are atypical of this type which is often poorly framed, giving this note a look comparable to the many Superbs that we have handled. With no finer options available for the number and a full Superb Gem appearance, expect the price this evening to fall closer to a full Superb Gem price.
