Description

Niles, OH - $5 1882 Brown Back Fr. 471 The First NB Ch. # (M)4190
The penned signatures are still present on this evenly circulated Brown Back. This newly reported note increases the total number of known notes to an even half dozen. The bank was opened in 1889 and went into receivership in 1908, but not before issuing more than $660,000--all Brown Backs. Most of the notes ended up back in the Treasury and were written off the books. The much lower number of outstanding notes explains the small number of survivors. PMG Choice Fine 15.
