Description

One of Three Known

Bay Point, CA - $5 1902 Plain Back Fr. 607 The First NB Ch. # (P)11561
Only three examples, all in just about the same grade, are known from this bank, which issued large notes only and had but $350 outstanding at its close in 1932. Track & Price has recorded four offerings during the past twenty years, one the Krakover example from 1990, a second the Colver example in 1999, which was reoffered later that year and is the example we are selling this evening, and the last the Horwedel specimen, which we sold for $7762.50 in 2004. Bay Point itself, which no longer exists, has an interesting history. An industrial community in Contra Costa County, it was founded in 1906 by the C.A. Smith Lumber Company. In 1931, after an attempt was made to change the community's name to Chicago (which was rejected by the Post Office Department), it was renamed Port Chicago. Port Chicago was a major military terminal during World War II but faded quickly after the war. The site is now abandoned, with the Post Office having discontinued service in 1969. PMG Choice Fine 15, with a distinctive Presidential vanity signature.
