Spectacular Union NB of Pasadena Red Seal

Pasadena, CA - $5 1902 Red Seal Fr. 589 The Union NB Ch. # (P)9121
Few if any California Red Seals offer the combination of beauty and rarity found in this Pasadena treasure. It comes from a short lived bank which issued large notes only, and is one of only two Red Seals in the census. The other was sold when we dispersed the fabled Colver collection in May of 1999, and has since been ensconced in a major California holding since its acquisition, leaving it likely off the market for many years to come. This specimen has no record of any offering during the past two decades, having been obtained privately by our consignor some years ago. Fortunately, it is as lovely as it is rare, displaying bright white paper, a bold red overprint, two color signatures, and only the most minimal traces of circulation. PMG has graded this note Choice Extremely Fine 45 EPQ, and it easily merits every point of that assessment. This is, as John Hickman used to say, a real peach of a note, and one which is worth every cent that it realizes tonight, whatever that figure may be.
