    Description

    Rare Uniface Type from 1916

East Africa Government of the East Africa Protectorate 10 Rupees 1.5.1916 Pick 2A PMG Very Fine 30.
A superb and rare offering, this example is from the East Africa Protectorate, which predates the Crown Colony of East Africa. Mombasa, the coastal city and trading post, was the capital of the Protectorate at the time. As British control extended inland, the need for local colonial currency was the impetus for these large uniface banknotes. All banknotes from the 1905-1919 series were supplemented by East African Currency banknotes beginning in 1920, and finally demonetized in 1930. This handsome 10 Rupees is fresh to the market, and is seen in original, lightly circulated condition. Its state of preservation is impressive considering the climate of the region and the age of this example. This is only the third example we have had the privledge to offer. Notice that this series is denominated in Rupees, which was the overarching currency for the entire Indian Ocean periphery at the time, even if it was not the official currency of a particular area. As an additional point of interest, this lot is offered by the grandson of Count Ibrahim Nathoo, prominent diplomat for the region at the time. Historic, rare, and pleasing, this fresh to the market banknote is sure to see spirited bidding.
