Description

Incredible, Blue Inked 10,000 Shillings from 1921

East Africa East African Currency Board 10,000 Shillings = 500 Pounds 15.12.1921 Pick 19 PMG Very Fine 30.
King George V and the African Lion flank this banknote which is enormous both in terms of size and spending power. 500 Pounds in any country in 1921 was a fortune, with the capability to buy land or other substantial purchases. This denomination was most often used to settle accounts between banks, and had limited circulation outside the financial industry. During the 1960s, the East Africa Currency Board was still actively redeeming these notes, and by 1965 all notes were redeemed. However, interestingly, some examples were recorded in private hands, despite being redeemed. This example is included, although thankfully, not cancelled. All details are on full display with just standard circulation. An extremely rare, high denomination banknote, examples are still missing from even the most advanced collections. A staggering face value, royal portrait, and extreme rarity make this one the 20th century's most famous currency notes.
