    Zanzibar 1908 Color Trial Specimen

Zanzibar Zanzibar Government 20 Rupees 1.1.1908 Pick 4cts Color Trial Specimen.
A striking example in every way. Zanzibar only issued this one series of Rupee notes, all featuring the dhow and fruit harvest vignettes. These notes were first issued in 1908, the first year of the currency, which replaced the Zanzibar riyal and was equivalent to the Indian Rupee which was popular in trade in that region due to the spice trade. These notes circulated until 1935, when replaced with the East African Shilling. The issued note used green inks for the intaglio features, instead of the darker print on this example, which is very well juxtaposed by the golden and pink underprint. Several punch out cancels are seen, along with Specimen stamps and the Waterlow and Sons Specimen circle. This is the only example of this type in the PMG Census, as well as the highest denomination graded. With examples of 10 Rupee notes realizing more than $60,000, high expectations are expected of this probable unique example. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
