    Description

Issued Serial Number 1 Rarity Presented to Former Treasurer

New Zealand Reserve Bank of New Zealand 10 Shillings 1.8.1934 Pick 154 Serial Number 1 PCGS Very Choice New 64.
This example is the first 10 Shilling note issued by the newly formed Reserve Bank of New Zealand. It was presented to the then Secretary of the Treasury, A.D.Park. Printed by Thomas de la Rue and Co. Ltd, and bears the signature of first Governor Leslie Lefeaux (1 January 1934 - 31 December 1940). Serial Z000001, where serials started in reverse.

On the face one notices King Tawhiao to the right, the second Maori king, from the painting of Gottfried Lindauer. To the left one sees the Kiwi, which by this stage was well known as New Zealand's national bird, and is based on the engraving by Dutch artist John Gerrard Keulemans. On the back is Mitre peak in Fiordland.

The sales records show that this example was bought at auction of the effects of the former Treasurer, A.D.Park in the early 1980s. It then sold in 2015, and realized $35,000.

Impressive and important, this initial denomination is widely collected in any grade. It is hard to imagine a scenario where this note could be bettered by another extant example, making this an opportunity not to be missed.
