Very Scarce Fr. 372 $20 Ornate Back

Fr. 372 $20 1890 Treasury Note PMG Very Fine 30.
These higher denomination notes are much more rare than those in lower denominations. The face features a portrait of John Marshall, who was the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1801 to 1835. A painting by Harry Inman served as the basis for the Charles Schlecht engraving. Marshall's portrait is the only one in the entire Treasury Note series without a direct Civil War involvement; all other notes feature portraits of high-ranking military officers or Lincoln Cabinet members. The ornate green back on this 1890 series is distinctive with its wave-like TWENTY in the center. Very scarce with less than 70 reported examples. Moderate circulation is visible across the clean paper surfaces. The strong brown treasury seal at the right and green back printing are very handsome. All four corners are slightly rounded. Ex: Lyn Knight, June 1999 sale, lot 379. There are several strong price records for this scarce type and grade in recent years, and this is an appealing example.
