Uncirculated Fr. 362 $5 1891 "Open Back" Type

    Fr. 362 $5 1891 Treasury Note PMG Uncirculated 62.
General George H. Thomas, engraved by Lorenzo Hatch, appears at the center of this 1891 $5 note with the small red treasury seal. Like other 1891 types, the back was opened up with white space in stark contrast with the prior 1890 "Ornate Back." A New note, but PMG designates this as "Trimmed," observed along the top right and across the bottom. This may be how this example was cut at issuance. Ex: Lyn Knight, July 1986 sale, lot 580.
    From The Mike Coltrane Collection.
