    Description

William Cornelius Van Horne, Signed stock by Van Horne as President of the Cuba Railroad Co., Orange-Black, 1909. Beautifully engraved by American Bank Note. Van Horne built the Canadian Pacific Railway. He was born in Illinois and became seriously involved with several American Railroads including the Chicago & Alton, Southern Minnesota RR, Chicago, Milwaukee, & St. Paul. The story of the building of the Canadian Pacific Railroad is mainly a history of his achievements in overcoming stupendous difficulties. Even later, a visit to Cuba in 1900 fired his imagination with the possibilities of a 350-mile railroad through the eastern provinces of the island. On Dec. 1,1902, the Cuba Railroad was opened for traffic, less than two years from the date of Van Horne's first visit to the island. His signature is very bold and barely touched by a hole cancellation.
