Set of 4 Bonds of Different Colors--City of Providence, State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, dated roughly 1892-1915. These superb bonds have three vignettes that include WHAT CHEER with a picture of Roger Williams being greeted on shore by Indians. This 17th century clergyman and President of Rhode Island was a Colonial thinker, religious liberal, and the earliest of the fathers of American democracy. He owes his enduring fame to his humanity and breadth of view and to his long record of opposition to privilege and self-seeking. These bonds were superbly engraved by American Banknote in blue, brown, green, and orange.
