    Description

    Sea Island Company (New York)
A certificate for 50 shares dated June 22, 1864. There is a central litho vignette of a spread eagle along with two vignettes of African-Americans harvesting cotton. One might infer from the date of this document, just months after the close of the Civil War, and the place of incorporation being New York, that the company represented an attempt to purchase Southern land at distress prices. There is an attached revenue stamp at upper left. One might infer also that the venture met with at least some success, as the holder of the stock, B.R. Ward, signed to redeem it on November 5, 1866. Extremely Fine.
