Description

Robert L. Stevens - Joint Stock of the Delaware & Raritan Canal Company & the Camden and Amboy Rail Road Company
A 1853 certificate in black on white signed as President by Robert L. Stevens. Stevens was an early railroad pioneer, engineer, inventor and naval architect. Among the earliest of American railroads to be in service, the Camden & Amboy was formed under a charter obtained in 1830 which gave Robert L. Stevens and his brother Edwin a virtual monopoly in railroading between New York and Philadelphia. Numerous early technological improvements were developed and first placed into service on the Camden & Amboy. This is an important early certificate for both the autograph and rail collector. There are three small punch cancellations through the signature. Very Fine.
