    Description

    Monongahela Bank of Brownsville (Pennsylvania)
An interesting certificate on a bank which was federally chartered in 1864. This 30 share certificate is dated 1874 and has the word "National" inserted in pen twice in the title of the institution. Bank management must have been quite thrifty to keep an inventory of certificates on hand for ten years without obtaining a new issue with the now correct bank title. This institution failed in 1931 and the certificate is uncancelled, indicating that it was held by the owner and/or heirs for more than half a century and never resulted in a return of capital to them. Very Fine.
